Courtyard houses epitomize traditional Chinese architecture. All quadrangles or "siheyuans", from their size and style one can tell whether they belonged to private individuals or the powerful and rich.

North Room

The most important rooms in a quadrangle courtyard are called the main structure or zhengfang. The main room is the north room, or the upper room, host room. With the ancestral tablet and the hall placed at the center, the main hall enjoys the highest position in the dwelling, its bay being much superior to other rooms in both depth and height. There are usually three bays in the main room, the middle one being an ancestral hall, the eastern one for grandparents and the west one for parents. Just like the traditional quadrangle courtyard, there are only two rooms in Lotus Guesthouses north room, these two rooms have an excellent position (very important to the Chinese) and the most delicate decoration.

East Wing Room and West Wing Room

The size of east wing room is slightly bigger than the one of west wing room. In ancient china, the elder son and the third son usually lives in the east wing room while the second and the fourth son usually live in the west wing room. Lotus Guesthouses rooms in the east wing room does not have a private bathroom, and thus is comparatively cheaper to the rooms in the west wing room (standard rooms) which comes with their own toilet and bath room.
