Silver medal route
The route of this run is along the central axis Beijing was build upon, from Tiananmen Square to the drum tower.
Start from the imposing portrait of Chairman Mao Tse Dong, run through the gates of heavenly peace to the Forbidden City then run along the side of the Forbidden City along its moat, once used to protect the residing emperor. Carry on north to Jing Shan Park, aka the coal hill park. Surrounded by trees and lush vegetation, you will find it hard to believe that you are in the heart of a city of millions. Climb up to the top of the hill at this park where there is the best view you can find of the Forbidden City as well as a 360 panoramic view of Beijing.
Next are the traditional Beijing urban dwellings; the hutongs. See how people have traditionally lived in Beijing for years, before the emergence of high rise buildings. Once again, you will feel that you are in the countryside rather than in the heart of this communist giant. Next is Houhai Lake, former imperial gardens. Pass by an interesting Yandai Xiejie hutong where there are many Chinese funky shops, ending at the Drum Tower, which was once the highest building in Beijing back in the old days.
