Meeting site and time: Cycle China office or upon request
Route:
Trip to the "real China" countryside. After around a two hour bus drive to a very remote village, we will meet a local old man, who has lived his whole life here. He will show us around the village. This little village has not been changed much since the culture revolution and there are only 5 families living here. The old man lives in the cave house, a very interesting dwelling where a couple of movies and TV series have actually been shot. We will be then taken by our host to the oldest Great Wall around Beijing. It is said that this part of wall was built during the Yan Kingdom over 2000 years ago. Interestingly the wall has been pulled down by man or wind, with only the clay built watchtowers left. We will do a small hike on the ancient wall then drive to a desert. This is particularly interesting as this desert is only 100 km from Beijing.
After a nice country meal, later in the afternoon, we will drive to a 700 years old town called Cockcrow Postal Town. During the Ming period Cockcrow Postal Town was the largest postal town of its kind in China, and the only surviving example of its era. Cockcrow is still inhabited with temples, offices, schools, and a wealth of courtyard houses, all surrounded by a massive rammed-earth-and-masonry town wall. We will wander around in this small ancient town, walk back to history, open the door of the temples, climb up to the city walls and check some old houses. A local tour guide will tell us about the local history and customs. Then we will take the time machine back to modern Beijing...
