Itinerary:
Day 1:
You will be picked up at the airport and taken to your hotel. We will then have a welcome Beijing Duck dinner at Beijing's famous "Li Qun" restaurant which is cozily located in the in the traditional hutong alleys near Tiananmen Square.
Day 2: Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City, Summer Palace, Peking University Campus
We start with a visit to Tiananmen Square, considered the heart and soul of the nation and which can apparently fit over a million people. We then head out to the impressive Forbidden City aka the Imperial Palace, home to 24 emperors since it was built almost 600 years ago and having over 10,000 rooms. This is followed by a visit to the Summer Palace, the largest and most complete imperial garden existing in China. It was first built in the 12th century as an imperial palace and occupies an area of 304 hectares featuring hilly and water scenery. Next is a trip to Peking University, aka Bei Da, one of the country's most prestigious educational institutions. Established during the Qing Dynasty, its architecture is rather unique in Beijing.
Day 3: Temple of Heaven, hutong tour bike tour, Houhai, Lama Temple, Guo Zi Jian, Nan Luo Gu Xiang Hutong, free activity, optional rickshaw tour (instead of cycling), optional shows
The first stop is the Temple of Heaven, once forbidden for "commoners" and foreigners to visit. Built almost 600 years ago for emperors to worship heaven and pray for good harvest, it is full of uniquely interesting structures, such as the Echo Wall. A hutong bike tour will proceed this fascinating visit. You will be able to see the real side of Beijingers' traditional lifestyle, enter their homes and interact with them. Unfortunately giving way to skyscrapers, renewed courtyard houses and whatnot, hutongs were once the only form of local urban dwelling. Riding through them, you will find it hard to imagine that you are in the centre of a capital of over 14 million and will more likely get the impression that you are in a silent country village.
We will then go to Hou Hai, an old imperial lake that attracts park goers, weekend fishermen, etc, but which has in recent years established itself as the bohemian part of the city, with stores, cafes, restaurants and bars. This area is indeed a mixture of tradition and modernity, in a way reflecting China's reality. Lama Temple. The biggest lamasery in Beijing, it was built over 400 years ago and then turned into a temple devoted to the cult of the living Lama. Covering an area of 66,000 m², it is particularly interesting for its combination of mainstream Han and ethnic Tibetan Buddhist architecture. We will then head out to one of China's ancient universities, Guo Zi Jian. This is then followed by a trip to Nan Luo Gu Xiang Hutong. Nearby Houhai, it follows its bohemian style only that in a much more relaxing, laid back environment. The rest of the day will be left for free activities with the chance of using a rickshaw if you do not wish to cycle.
Day 4: Huangyaguan Great Wall and Qing East Imperial Tomb (Tianjin)
We will visit a beautiful section of the Wall known as Huangyaguan famous for its tranquility and lack of tourists. After a 2.5 hours drive to the Great wall, you will be able to climb up on it. In a nutshell, this hike with spectacular views consists of walking up the highest tower, then descending back where we will be picked up by a bus. The hike takes 2 hours and will be followed by a relaxing authentic country meal with cold beer. We will then proceed to driving to the East Qing Imperial tombs, the largest and most complete complex of imperial tombs in China located in Tianjin. These tombs are considered a national treasure, and are a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage.
